What is “AWS WorkSpaces”

An Amazon WorkSpace is a cloud-based virtual desktop that can act as a replacement for a traditional desktop. It helps eliminate the complexity in managing inventory, OS versions and patches.  With Amazon WorkSpaces, end-users can access the document, applications and resources they need anywhere, anytime, from any supported device including laptops, iPad, Kindle Fire, or Android tablets.

Problem Statement

To protect Boonthavorn employees from COVID-19, the company plan to move the workload of staff from office to home before Thailand’s lockdown, which required a highly secure environment that can integrate with existing systems and applications operating in its internal network running on an AWS account. AWS AD is used to authenticate users. To avoid excessive costs, flexible charges are desirable and migration should be easily manageable once the pandemic subsides and staff return to work as usual.  

Solution

True IDC recommends Boonthavorn to use AWS WorkSpaces for its virtualization service. AWS WorkSpaces runs on multiple operating systems including Linux and Windows. On Windows OS, customers can choose to use Microsoft Office as part of the bundled license.  This can fulfill customer requirements without any 3rd party tools.

AWS WorkSpaces offers User Pool to control users which utilizes AWS AD for authentication which can also be built into a specified AWS network. AWS WorkSpaces are easy to connect with existing systems and are very secure. 

AWS WorkSpaces offers two payment methods: AutoStop and AlwaysOn. Customers can choose the most convenient payment method. In addition, AWS WorkSpaces is easy to create quickly at a controlled cost. Customers can rest assured that they’ll be able to create a virtual environment for WFH to stay ahead of COVID-19.

Boonthavorn is very satisfied with the use of AWS WorkSpaces, which can be summarized as follows:

• Quickly gathering requirements and preparing the system within a week just before COVID-19 lockdown in Thailand. 
  
• Users have the flexibility to access the application from all devices as WorkSpaces supports both from computers and from mobile devices.
• There is a high level of security because the user that can access it must be verified via the AD system only.
